The thyroid gland is small in front of the neck, wrapped around the trachea (windpipe). It is a butterfly-shaped organ with a small center and two broad wings that wrap around the side of your throat. The thyroid gland in your body makes the hormone that helps control many important functions, including regulating blood pressure, body temperature, heart rate, metabolism, and reaction to other body hormones.

Few health conditions associated with Thyroid:

  • Hypothyroidism (Underactive Thyroid): It is when your thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormones into your bloodstream and lowers your metabolism. It can cause fatigue, weight gain, and a decreased capacity to resist cold temperatures. For Hypothyroidism, hormone replacement therapy is the main treatment.
  • Hyperthyroidism (Overactive Thyroid): When your Thyroid releases high levels of thyroid hormones, this condition is called hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism can make your metabolism speed up.

The Thyroid controls different aspects of the human body. Therefore, it can cause several different symptoms.

Common Symptoms of Thyroid:

A variety of symptoms can be a sign of thyroid disease. Unfortunately, they are often very similar to other medical conditions. It can be difficult to know if you’re having symptoms of Thyroid or something else entirely.

The following symptoms may be linked to thyroid disease, but that does not mean you have it. It may be time to consult your healthcare provider and check your Thyroid.

  1. Changes in weight: One of the most common signs of thyroid disorder is an unexplained weight change. When your thyroid gland cannot produce enough thyroxine, it can cause your metabolism to slow down, causing weight gain and leading to Hypothyroidism.
  2. Swelling in your neck: An enlargement is a visible clue that something may be wrong with the thyroid gland. Hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism may cause the occurrence of goiter. Sometimes, cancer lumps that grow inside the Thyroid can cause swelling in the neck.
  3. Changes in heart rate: Thyroid hormones affect every organ in the body and can also influence how quickly the heart beats. Hyperthyroidism may cause a rapid heartbeat, which may result in heart palpitations of various kinds, as well as an increase in blood pressure and a pounding sensation.

Hypothyroidism can cause different symptoms, such as:

  • Slow heart rate
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol levels
  • Constricted blood vessels
  • Fluid retention

Untreated symptoms can cause heart failure.

  • Skin-related issues: Thyroid can cause problems related to your skin and nails.
  • Dry, pale, or itchy skin
  • Deep lines on your palms and soles
  • Swelling on the face
  • Widening nose
  • Sweating less or more than before
  • Protruding eyes
  • Brittle nails with ridges

Skin conditions like vitiligo, hives, or alopecia areata can increase your risk of developing thyroid disease.

Constipation and diarrhea: When something disrupts the production of the Thyroid, it may cause you to slow the digestive process. This condition occurs in people with Hypothyroidism.

Hyperthyroidism, the overactive thyroid gland, can cause more frequent bowel movements (diarrhea).

Apart from the mentioned symptoms, fatigue, depression and anxiety, changes in appetite, brain fog, sexual dysfunction, thinning hair, irregular periods, muscle pain, cold and heat tolerance, lump in the throat, difficulty sleeping, and problems with pregnancy are some of the common symptoms of thyroid disorder.
