One of the main rituals of Umrah is cutting the hair, which is called Halq/Taqsir. What are Halq and Taqsir?  


Halq includes shaving the head, after performing Umrah. This act is compulsory only for men. A man must do it to exit from the state of Ihram. If you have no hair to complete the ritual, you must have to shave your head with a razor.


Taqsir advised to women for cutting their hair. It is related to cutting hair. Women should cut their hair equal to one inch or a fingertip. It is the Wajib (obligatory) act for women that is required them to depart the Ihram state.

Can I cut my own hair after Umrah?

One of the requirements for performing Umrah is shaving the head or cutting the hair. Performing Halq/Taqsir is one of the important acts of Umrah. It is permissible for a pilgrim to cut the hair by himself or herself. If you have done your previous all rituals of Umrah, then you can easily perform Halq/Taqsir. 

A male pilgrim can shave his hair by himself. But the thing is he must follow all the rules of shaving hair. It includes removing all the hairs from the head until there are no hairs left. When all the hair has been shaved and the ritual has been done now, you can be called a pilgrim.  

For women, performing Taqsir by themselves is compulsory. It includes cutting the hair to one inch. Women can cut their hair by themselves. They can also take cut their hair from a Mahram with them. But she cannot take a cut from a non-mahram. 

Halq Rules for Men

  • Halq is not a requirement for women in any circumstance. 
  • The entire head must be shaved if you're performing Halq. 
  • Even if a person has no hair, the ritual still needs to be performed with a razor.
  • Halq or Taqsir must be performed by facing the Qibla from the right side.

Taqsir Rules for Women

  • Women should perform Taqsir rather than Halq to exit from Ihram.
  • All ends of the hair should be cut to the length of a fingertip or one inch to perform for the Taqsir.
  • If a woman’s hair is short, it must be slightly cut to escape from Ihram’s condition.

Umrah haircut Importance

To get an exit from Ihram, it is compulsory for both men and women that they must perform a haircut ritual as their final step. This ritual has special meaning, as one's head hair is associated with appearance in the outside world. One must follow this ritual and adhere to the spiritual path to complete the Umrah.


For both males and females, Halq/Taqsir is necessary. It ought to be carried out after the completion of all Umrah rituals. You will be referred to as a proper pilgrim after performing this ritual.
