Why Is Using A Portable Ramp Safe?

Why Is Using A Portable Ramp Safe?

My grandfather had to use a wheelchair for most of his last days. Although the nursing home where he lived was equipped with ramps for mobility, when it came to visit his home, we needed to be able to provide safe access and exit routes.

We needed something portable that could be quickly and easily installed and stored away when it was not in use. We could not afford to invest in a permanent ramp system, but we had to make sure that the ramp was safe.

We discovered that there are many portable ramps available on the market. However, some portable ramps are safer than others. This list of questions is based on our experience.

It will help you to make an informed decision when you are looking at a portable wheelchair ramp.

  • How does the ramp rest on an entryway or stairway edge?
  • What prevents the ramp from sliding?
  • What are the limitations of use?

1. How The Ramp Will Sit On A Landing Or Stairway?

A ramp that isn't flush with the transition area can result in a wobbly or unlevel ramp. Wobbly ramps can be dangerous for mobility devices and pose a danger to anyone who is using them.

Portable ramps can be used on many landing surfaces so it is important to pay attention to how the ramp is sitting while being used. A ramp might not be as secure on your vehicle's flooring as it would be on your front porch or interior threshold. This does not mean that the ramp is unsafe. It may not be suitable for that landing surface or require a lip extension in order to stabilize the ramp onto the transition zone.

While a portable ramp may be sturdy and safe, it can pose a danger if the area where you want to transfer is uneven. Before installing a ramp, ensure that the ramp's landing area is level. Repair damaged wooden steps or pour concrete in areas that are cracked before you can use the ramp safely.

The top edge of portable ramps often has a curving or angled extension. When the ramp is in use, this extension rests on the top of the threshold, vehicle steps, or landing. The lip extension can be anywhere from 2-9 inches in length and serves to support the ramp's top, as well as create a smooth transition point to the wheelchair.

 2. What Prevents The Ramp From Sliding Off Its Top?

There are many factors that can affect the friction between the ramp and the surface it rests on, including its weight, strength, dimensions, and special features. Some ramps are equipped with holes at the top and bottom that allow bolts or screws to be used to attach the ramp to the surface they are resting on. This feature is not recommended if the ramp will be used frequently.

Rubber feet on some portable ramps can offer traction and prevent the ramp from sliding down when weight is added. Some ramps have a lip extension, which can be used to attach the portable ramp to a van or SUV.

The features that prevent a ramp or wheelchair from sliding from the ramp's side are also important. Senior Safety Advice states that all ramps must have safety edges, also known as "curbs" (or containment edges). To prevent a wheelchair from running off the ramp's incline, safety edges are placed along the ramp's sides.

You can request portable access ramps with or without handrails in custom sizes and weight capacities.

3. Foldable

Portable ramps can be folded to make them portable and easy to store. However, they can pose safety risks depending on the design. PVI and EZ Access portable ramps can be folded in half lengthwise or in half.

These types of folding ramps can pose a danger to pets, children, and people walking on them. There have been cases where hinges rise above the ramp surface, which can pose a danger to trip-and-fall. Aluminum folding ramps can be folded horizontally. They are seamless, and you won't trip over them. The slopes of the EZ Access and PVI portable ramps are grit-tread.

They are made from embossed aluminum with tread dots, making them ideal for all weather conditions. Grit tread material is not suitable for use in adverse weather conditions. Although 90% of portable ramp use won't occur in snow or icy conditions, it is possible! Our folding ramp might be a better option if this is an option.

4. Use A Portable Ramp In Many Settings

It is important to be aware of the limitations of the ramp's use. A shorter ramp should not be used to climb higher vertically as it can pose a danger of injury. Every ramp has a weight carrying capacity. This means that the ramp's weight and the size of the user must also be considered.

Before purchasing a portable ramp, make sure to consult the manual that came with your mobile device. Motorized scooters, for example, have an incline limit to ensure they work properly. This step is necessary to ensure that your device has the correct slope before you make your purchase.

For guidelines on-ramp use, make sure you read the user's guide. This manual will provide information about the ramp's assembly and general guidance. For any clarification or additional questions, please contact the manufacturer directly.

5. Ramp Is Appropriate For The Location

A ramp that extends beyond your porch and into your yard is unsafe is one example. Experts will help you choose the right size ramp for your situation.

My family was able, with the help of professionals and the right research, to find the ideal portable ramp for my grandfather's homecoming. Our family was able to enjoy these last moments with our grandfather without worrying about transporting him.
