Before we get into how to improve pond water quality, why dont we talk about why we need to improve fish pond water quality? The quality of pond water directly affects the growth of our fish, so improving pond water quality might help us reduce fish diseases that contribute to the healthy growth and development of fish. If the pond's water quality is not good, it will cause many fish deaths and bring heavy economic losses to the fish farmers. No matter how good the fish food you bring for your fish, it will be no help if water quality is below a certain level.

Enhance Water Injection And Change:

Water purification is essential for improving water quality, so regular water changes are necessary for improvement. There are many residual baits and dirt accumulate in the pond during the breeding process. Ammonia, nitrogen, hydrogen sulphide and other harmful substances also deteriorate the water quality. If the fish pond has weak water quality maintenance, wait at least three or four days before shortening the water change cycle. Do not change the water daily, as it might be irritating for the fish that may produce a stress reaction.

Bonus Tip* The water level should be kept as high as possible during the hot summer months.

Reducing Density Of Fish:

If you keep too many fish in a pond that is not large enough, the density of fish will increase, and it will become difficult to maintain good water quality. In such a scenario, the best solution to improve the quality of the pond water is to reduce the number of fish. For example, if there are more than 10 inches of fish per hundred gallons of water, your pond is probably overcrowded with fish. When there are too many fish, they produce an excessive amount of waste, which can lead to an imbalance in the pond water. The other best thing you can do is use water plants to help you maintain water quality.

Do Not Over Feed Fish:

Excess dirt in water is the main cause of deteriorating water quality, which is often caused by overfeeding fish. This dirt is typically a result of leftover bait and fish feces that start rotting in the pond due to overfeeding. To prevent this, make sure you feed your fish only two times a day and only as much as they can eat in 2 to 3 minutes. Opt for high-quality fish food that floats rather than one that sinks to improve the water quality of your fish pond. If fish food sinks and isn't eaten, it will decay at the bottom of the pond, polluting the water. You can refer to the fish feeding guide for more detailed information.

Proper Oxygenation:

Proper oxygenation is crucial for improving the water quality in a fish pond. The oxygenation equipment should be turned on daily during the peak fish growing season to increase the dissolved oxygen in the pond. This will provide a comfortable growing environment for the fish and will also depend on factors such as the weather, fish feeding, and activity.

Remove Contaminants:

Leaves, twigs, fish waste, and leftover fish food can all accumulate at the bottom of a pond. If left uncleaned, these contaminants can decompose and cause ammonia levels to increase in the pond. High ammonia levels can be harmful to your fish, so it's important to address the issue immediately. If you notice your koi fish jumping out of the water, this could be a sign that the ammonia levels in the pond are peaking. Consider purchasing an ammonia tester to check the ammonia levels accurately.

The water quality is very important for the survival of your fish. We need to keep a sharp eye on the temperature and PH also, an Imbalance can increase the toxicity of ammonia and hydrogen sulphide. Improving poor water quality can also improve the survival rate of fry.
