The Apple Watch dwarfs its competitors in many ways, but not when it comes to battery life. Since its launch six years ago, the best-selling smartwatch hasn't changed much in terms of hardware. From Series 1 to the latest Series 6, their appearance is almost the same, the same battery life - 18 hours.

How long does the Apple Watch battery last?

The Apple Watch, regardless of series, has all-day battery life for checking the time, getting notifications, playing music, and exercising, according to the Cupertino-based tech company.

How do I save battery on my Apple Watch?

What if your Apple Watch doesn't last 18 hours? Does this mean something is wrong with the battery, or are there ways to make your Apple Watch battery last longer?

1. Reconnect your Apple Watch and iPhone

First, disconnect your Apple Watch from your iPhone and reconnect them. If your battery drains faster than that, there may be a problem between the watch and the phone. These hiccups can be removed by fixing the connection.

2. Update your software

From time to time, Apple releases a new software platform for the Watch that adds new features or fixes minor bugs. WatchOS 7, released in September 2020, reportedly caused excessive battery drain for some Apple Watch users. Fortunately, Apple has released watchOS 7.0.2 to address this issue. If you are hesitant to update the software, you can update now without any battery issues. Best of all, watchOS 7 brings many exciting features and is compatible with Series 3 and above.

3. Turn off the 'Wrist Screen'

If you're already familiar with optimizing the battery on your watch, you probably know that the display contributes a lot to battery consumption. The longer the display is on, the faster the battery will drain. You don't want the screen to light up every time you reach for the coffee or use your hand to adjust your glasses. It is wise to turn off the "Wake Screen on Wrist Raise" especially if you do a lot of computer or lifting work.

4. Disable Always on Display

What if the display is always on even when the wrist is down? That, inevitably, causes a significant battery drain. Both the Apple Watch Series 5 and 6 come with an Always On Display feature that lets you track your exercise or notifications. Apple recently took it a step further - the Series 6's screen is 2.5 times brighter when it's always on, ultimately using more battery.

5. Adjust the brightness

Screen brightness affects your iPhone's battery life, and the Apple Watch is no exception. There is no need to set your Apple Watch's brightness to 100% unless you are using it outdoors in intense sunlight.

6. Use a dark watch face

Black pixels consume less power in OLED screens because all the LEDs are off. In contrast, white uses more energy because the LEDs have to light up. Using a dark, minimal watch face can help maximize your Apple Watch's battery life.

7. Minimize movement

While the only movement on an analog watch face is the hands, the Apple digital screen is more active, meaning when you move the screen to access icons. Every movement on your screen requires power and battery. If motion reduction is enabled, screen motions are reduced, although not much power is saved.

8. Close apps you don't use

Even if you are not actively using the app, they run in the background using battery power. Regularly closing apps you don't use will increase your battery life. This can be especially true for users who work out a lot and use the app to track exercise—open the fitness app to start a run, but then forget to press end. To close the Fitness app completely, press the Quit button in the app or remove it from the Apple Watch background.

9. Turn on Workout Power Saving Mode

A heart rate monitor is a great tool to monitor one's health. Some exercise programs use heart rate as the primary indicator of exercise intensity, while some use other indicators such as calories, miles, etc. When you're not working out or don't need to measure your exercise heart rate, turn on Energy Saving Mode under the Workout tab.

10. Turn off Hey Siri

When the display is on, your watch listens and is ready for the two magic words "Hey Siri." If you rarely use this feature when asking Apple's PA about the weather, or playing your favorite song, you might want to consider turning it off.
