What Does a Support Coordinator Do?
3 min read

The role of a support coordinator is an integral part of your NDIS plan. They work with you to understand your goals, assist in finding providers and services and build on informal supports such as family and friends. They also help you manage your plan, including submitting reports to the NDIA and advocating on your behalf.

They have a strong understanding of the NDIS and its supports. As a result, they can explain the complexities of your plan to you and help you understand terminology. This helps you to make better decisions about your supports. They can even act as a mediator in the case of any disputes or end provider relationships that don’t suit your needs.

In addition to their knowledge of the NDIS and supports, a good support coordinator will have a deep appreciation for your individuality. They should value honest communication and work hard to find providers that best meet your requirements. They should also have a thorough understanding of disability and community sector services in your area, especially quality ones that can help you achieve your goals.

The amount of support coordination ndis funding you receive varies, as it is based on what your NDIS planner deems to be “reasonable and necessary” to pursue your goals. This is separate to any other funding you may receive for NDIS supports.

About 4 in 10 NDIS Participants have support coordination included in their plan. This figure does vary across different states and territories (young children tend to get less).

You can request support coordination as an additional support in your NDIS preplanning meeting, or if you think you may need it later on. If you do request it, your NDIS plan will have a line for it with a specific dollar amount that you can spend up to.

A good support coordinator will know how to navigate the NDIS and can identify a range of providers that offer disability and community services in your area. They can also use their knowledge of the NDIS system to ensure potential providers are reputable and have met the NDIS Quality and Safeguards requirements. They can also help you to access services that are funded by other government or community agencies.

In some cases, the same person can be a support coordinator and a service provider for you. However, it is important to note that the service provider can’t also deliver the support coordination services. This is because of a legal requirement that prevents conflicts of interest from arising.
