Things To Know About Cold Brew Coffee
3 min read

Cold coffee brew is one of the most trending things today. It is refreshing and sweet, fills a nice niche in your coffee drinking schedule, and as convenient as popping a pod in a machine. Dive in if you are looking forward to learning more about this delicious beverage and how it can be fit into your coffee life.

Cold Brew vs cold brew concentrate

Cold brew concentrate is a brew with high ratio of coffee to water. The drip coffee we are used to drinking has a ratio of 1:16, 1 part of coffee and 16 parts of water. However, cold brew concentrate has a ratio of 1:4 to 1:8. It is literally a concentrated coffee drink and quite stronger. It has large amount of caffeine.

How is cold brew made?

The ideal cold brew formula is:

Coffee grounds + water + time (8 to 10 hours) = the coldest brew.

Cold brew coffee is generally made by steeping coffee in water for the said number of hours at cold or ambient temperature. The slow and low temperature made cold brew taste quite different from the usual hot brewing even with the same time of coffee beans.
Cold brew coffee is made as a concentrate and then it is diluted when put to use.

Cold brew vs iced coffee

Iced coffee are normal coffee, normal brewed coffee or espresso to which one adds ice. These days we see flash chill or flash brew, which is a more popular innovation on iced coffee. The flash methods take two steps to increase the quality of iced coffee:

  • Reduce the ratio of water to coffee to balance the added ice that will ultimately dilute the coffee.
  • Cool down the hot-brewed coffee after brewing directly into the vessel filled with ice.

Cold-brew is so called because it is slow-steeped for longer periods of time. It differs from iced coffee, which has purposely brewed to extract those additional flavors and other coffee compounds that do not get extracted in a general cold coffee brew.

People love to drink cold-brew coffee because it is extremely convenient and less acidic. Further if you have some stock of older coffee beans, you can use this method to put those old beans to use. Cold brewing helps you prepare large batches of coffee in advance. It also creates a refreshing, convenient, and caffeinated drink for busy mornings.
