When it is dark out, why the street lights might turn on automatically

Cadmium sulfide, or CdS, photosensitive resistance, or the CdS cell, is the ubiquitous photosensitive component. The photosensitive resistance value changes as the light becomes brighter. High light intensities lead to near-zero resistance and excellent electrical conductivity. But when there is no illumination, the resistance is high, making the system effectively non-conductive. A straightforward circuit may be made by connecting the CdS parts and an electric relay directly. This circuit may be used to energize a powerful magnetic coil in bright light while isolating the currents in dim light. CdS components, on the other hand, seldom have enough current to activate the relay with light alone. To increase currents across a CdS component, a transistor is required. The diagram below depicts a common circuit:

The transistor functions like a switch. The base, emitter, and collector are its three prongs.

The current from the emitter to the collector will be considerable while the current from the emitter to the base is low. So, in this circuit, with the base grounded, the "switch" (the routes from the emitter to the collector) was active. The streetlights switch off because the photosensitive component opens the transistor and activates the solenoid coil power relay when it detects light. The light-sensitive part had high impedance, so the relays didn't get activated and the street lights stayed on when it became dark.
