If you or someone you know is receiving a dental implant, they should be aware of what to expect during recovery. As it is an invasive procedure, a dental implant will require post-operative care.

The Next Day

You are the most vulnerable to infection during the first 24 hours following your procedure. It is expected to experience tenderness or soreness around the teeth, jaw and gums. Stay away from the treated tooth to the best of your ability, as touching the area could cause infection and irritation. Avoid smoking as well, as it can lead to implant failure or infection. Be sure to apply a cold compress to reduce possible swelling, and follow your oral surgeons suggestions regarding pain medication. To encourage healing, rinse your mouth with warm salt water. Do not drive or operate heavy-machinery for 24–48 hours, as dizziness can occur.

Eating and Drinking

Do not consume hot liquids or use a straw during the first seven days of recovery. Using a straw could dislodge a blood clot, which may lead to pain or bleeding. Try your best to maintain nutritional value on a soft food diet, including mashed potatoes, yogurt, applesauce, etc. Stay away from chewy or hard foods, as they can also lead to complications with your implant.

Two-Three Days Later

This is the time for you to begin integrating more solid foods to your diet. If you experience any discomfort, resume eating soft foods. Be sure to maintain proper oral care and brush your teeth gently, allowing the jaw to heal. Following three days of post-operative care, you may return back to work.

For the Future

Be sure to take care of your implant to the best of your ability, as wear and tear can decrease it’s longevity. Follow up with your oral surgeon for your permanent crown during your post-op visit.
