Medicine is a vocation that holds much respect in the world. As one of the traditional careers that has long been regarded as a noble profession, pursuing a career in medicine offers opportunities to make a profound impact on the community.

There may be several reasons why you wish to pursue a career in medicine. Maybe it’s a personal calling or a calculated financial step. Regardless of the motivation, the field of medicine offers intellectual challenges, constant learning and many rewarding experiences. And, for many aspiring students, obtaining a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery or what we commonly call the MBBS degree is important.

In India, MBBS colleges are some of the prestigious institutions for studying medicine. With globally recognised faculties, academic rigour and advanced hands-on clinical training, many students dream of pursuing an MBBS degree in India. But, the sad truth is that while Indian institutions offer excellent medical education, only a few students get to realise this dream. This is where study MBBS abroad comes into the equation.

Why do students choose to study MBBS abroad?

There are many other reasons why students choose to pursue their MBBS abroad.

Many foreign medical institutions pave the way for Indian students to pursue a career in medicine. In a country like the Philippines, which is recognised as having one of the best education systems in Asia, the advancements in learning methodologies and research in medicine have attracted my eyes in the past few years. Furthermore, the quality of education, world-recognised universities, WHO, FAIMER, ECFMG and Medical Council of India (MCI) recognised MBBS (MD) courses and English-speaking curriculum facilitate an appealing culture for students.

International acclaimed universities also offer some cutting-edge facilities, unique research opportunities, exposure to diverse cultures, and exposure to diverse career opportunities. Furthermore, many countries have a streamlined admission process, affordable fee structure, and opportunities to pursue residency in foreign countries, making for an attractive outlet for aspiring students.

Beyond high-quality education facilities, there are several other reasons why many Indian students are increasingly opting to study MBBS abroad, let us look at some of them.

Affordable Fee Structure

Contrary to popular belief, studying MBBS abroadis designed to be easily accessible for students in India. Many international universities encourage students to pursue MBBS by offering affordable tuition and scholarship aid options to international students. Furthermore, with economic accommodation options and affordable cost of living in many countries (the Philippines included), students get to pursue their studies within a specific budget.

Ease in Admission

It is in contrast to colleges in India, where only limited seats are allotted each year to admit students, universities abroad are more open to the idea of diversity and welcoming students from diverse backgrounds. Also, many international universities may not even require students to undergo an entrance test, only the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), making the admission process more accessible for those who want to pursue MBBS.

Clinical Exposure

Universities that employ advanced learning techniques put much focus on the importance of enriching their students with exposure to diverse medical practices and healthcare techniques and broadening their perspectives. Furthermore, global exposure provides unique learning opportunities, extending beyond textbooks, where students get to participate in discussions, exchange ideas and immerse in different cultural environments that foster both personal and professional growth.

MCI Coaching

When it comes to studying medicine abroad, many Indian students have the ultimate plan to pursue their medical practice in their home country. Many international universities are MCI-approved, thus opening doors for students to pursue their practice in India after their MBBS.

The Medical Council of India (MCI) is a regulatory body responsible for establishing and maintaining high standards for medical education and practice in India. Many universities abroad recognize the significance of MCI screening and ensure the curriculum aligns with Indian medical standards. Many even collaborate with recognized institutions to hold MCI coaching sessions to prepare students for the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE).

Coaching institutions in India, like LIMRA Overseas Education, a recognized FMGE coaching centre in Chennai, render MCI coaching in world-recognized universities in the Philippines - Davao Medical School Foundation Inc. and Brokenshire Medical College – to help medical students prepare for the exam by covering all 19 medical subjects with mock tests and guidance for clearing FMGE screening.

MBBS as a course is extremely demanding, and so is the multifaceted nature of the diverse career paths it opens up to, such as pharmacology, pediatrics, anatomy, general surgery, psychiatry, microbiology, and the like. However, the potential of lifelong learning MBBS has to offer in terms of making a tangible difference in the lives of many people far supersede the many sleepless nights and time spent away from loved ones.
