Outdated postdated checks

A " stale dated check " (sometimes known as a "stale check") is a check that has not been cashed for more than six months. Although banks, credit unions, and other financial institutions may allow you to cash or deposit an old check in your account, it is not required by law.

How can I tell if a check is bad?

There are a few methods to determine if a check is old-fashioned d if you received it, or if you have questions about a check you wrote.

1. Look for the date on the front of the check. The check is out of date if the date on it is older than 180 days.

2. Look for a time limit set by the issuer. The check may contain preprinted text stating how long it is valid from the bank that issued it. For example, some company controls may include "Not valid after 60 days." It is worth mentioning that the bank can still cash the check even if the displayed time limit has passed.

3. Pay attention to the checks you write. Double-check your bank account number to make sure you haven't written any checks that haven't cleared. If a check hasn't been cashed in more than six months, your bank may consider it stale. How Long Is A Money Order Good For?

Are stale checks valid?

A stale personal or business check is one that has been open for more than six months, but that doesn't mean it's worthless, a bad check, or your bank won't accept it. It simply means that the banking institution can reject the check.

What to do with a stale check

If you haven't deposited a check in over six months, they may consider it stale. You can try to deposit or cash it, but you run the risk of your bank rejecting it or having the check returned to the issuing bank.

Consider contacting the check writer and requesting a new check before attempting to cash or deposit an old check. Regardless of whether you've written a check that hasn't been cashed yet, you can call the payee to see if they still have it and plan to pay it.

If they insist on cashing the check, offer to write them a new one, but make sure you get the old one back first or place a money order on it. This can save you money by preventing you from incurring any unexpected penalties due to negative balances.

Personal Checks vs. Company Printed Checks

Do personal checks have a shorter expiration date than company-printed checks? While there is no technical difference between these two types of checks, personal checks have a slightly higher chance of triggering fines because businesses are less likely to keep bare-bones balances.

Some checks have language on them that says they are void after 90 days.

They may reasonably dismiss this as a ploy to persuade individuals not to hold a check in their hands for too long. Regardless of what is written on the check, the six-month rule applies.

Example of the expiration of checks by type

The US Treasury Secretary issues one-year checks. Keep in mind that you must cash your federal tax refund check within one year of the date they issued it. State and federal agencies can issue you a new check.

You must notify the entity that issued you your state tax refund or a local authority check if you lose it. Governments at the state and municipal levels may have their own expiration dates.

Personal checks are normally good for up to six months from the date of issue but don't expect the bank to keep track of the dates.

Traveler's checks and money orders issued by the United States Postal Service are not canceled.

What are blank checks?

A blank check, also known as a carte blanche, is a check that has no monetary value on it but has already been signed.

In the metaphorical sense, it refers to a scenario where one party has formed an agreement that is open-ended or imprecise, making it vulnerable to abuse, or where one party is ready to go to any length to achieve its goals.

Although banks are only required by law to pay checks for a six-month period, it is usually a smart idea to deposit checks as soon as you receive them to prevent any difficulties. If you suspect that a check you have made has been lost or stolen, contact your bank immediately to cancel it.
