Our Essential Checklist of What Goes Through an MOT?
5 min read

An MOT (Ministry of Transport) test is an annual evaluation of a vehicle's overall safety and roadworthiness.

While an MOT Peterborough will provide you a general idea of your car's condition, it is not a substitute for routine maintenance, especially if you discover something doesn't seem, sound, or feel right. It's probable that your auto insurance may be void in the case of an accident if you are operating a faulty vehicle, putting both yourself and other people in danger.

WHAT IS INSPECTED DURING A MOT?

  1. CONTROL AND SUSPENSION

The steering and suspension are usually put through a number of inspections both inside and outside the car, as well as under the hood.

  • Inside the vehicle

It will get examined to see how the steering wheel itself is holding up and whether it is firmly fastened to the steering column.

  • Below the vehicle

We will inspect your shock absorbers and suspension for damage.

Under the hood, the steering rack or box will be also inspected.

The assessor will be looking for items like leaks, damaged or missing parts, and excessive movement throughout the vehicle.

  1. MIRRORS AND THE WINDSCREEN

To ensure that the driver's view is not hindered in any way, the windscreen and mirrors will undergo a variety of inspections.

Mirrors- The mirrors must be safe and provide an unimpeded, clear view of the sides and the back.

Windscreen- Any impediment or damage to the windscreen's glass that is bigger than 10 mm in front of the driver and 40 mm in the wider sweeping area

Wipers & washers for the windscreen- For the driver to have a clean view of the road, the washers and wipers must clear a sizable enough area. The wiper blades must be in good condition and there has to be enough screenwash. Before taking your car in for a MOT, check the condition of the wiper blades and the amount of screenwash. You can easily top these off or replace them yourself, saving you money by avoiding the cost of hiring a professional to do it Tyres Peterborough.

  1. EXHAUST, EMISSIONS, AND FUEL

Your vehicle's fuel, emissions, and exhaust system will all get examined in four primary categories.

Exhaust system- To make sure it is safe and leak-free, the complete exhaust system will undergo a thorough inspection.

Catalytic converter (if present)- If a catalytic converter is in the vehicle's design, it must be present and working.

Emissions- While the engine is operating, a gas analyser probe will get used to measure the emissions. This verifies that the emissions of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons are below permitted limits. There may be a MOT failure if there is thick blue or black smoke.

  1. GENERAL CHECK OF THE CAR'S STRUCTURE

Along with the vehicle's chassis, body, seats, doors, and engine mountings. Moreover, it will verify:

Seatbelts- Will inspect the condition and safety of the seatbelts.

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)- It is easy to see the VIN (vehicle identification number). This can either be available, stamped, or fixed with a VIN plate on the chassis or body.

Warning lights- All warning lights will be also examined to ensure that they are all properly functional.

Pedals and brakes- The effectiveness of the brakes will get evaluated, and the levers, pedals, and brakes themselves will all receive a general inspection.

  1. REGISTRATION PLATES

These ought to be front and back-fitted, readable, and secure. Correct spacing and character formation should get used.

  1. WHEEL CHECKS

The wheels will get examined based on a variety of factors.

Condition- The actual wheels should be in decent shape.

Tyres -Tyres must be in excellent condition, have the proper load and speed rating for the vehicle, have a minimum of 1.6mm of tread depth, and be free of structural flaws like rips or bulges.

  1. LIGHTS AND SIGNALS

Light or signaling issues are the cause of a certain amount of MOT failures. For optimal safety, it is essential that all of the car's lights and signals work properly. The rear reflectors, registration plate lights, indicator, fog, brake, front, and rear lights must all be:

 Secure and placed properly

  • In excellent condition
  • Devoid of obstruction
  • Showing the proper colour
  • Be turned on using a single switch
  • Lights must be identical if they operate in pairs. We'll examine the electrical wiring, battery, and horn to make sure they're all working properly.

Give them one more check before your MOT even though you will likely have noticed if one of your lights is out. You can save money by replacing a bulb yourself in the majority of autos.

The list of things examined during an MOT Peterborough may seem exhaustive, but if your automobile is displaying any of these defects, chances are good that you are already aware of and have corrected the issue. About half of the defects discovered during MOTs may get avoided with simple maintenance to your car. Your car will have the best chance of passing its MOT the first time with proper upkeep and frequent inspections throughout the year.
