Humans have a deep-rooted relationship with storytelling. Even since we are little, our parents tell us tales and fables, and we are transported into a different plain of existence, one that transcends the mundaneness of the everyday.

We all have a story to tell. And if such is true, the stories we tell are to be distinct, just like every individual. It should comprise our own particular essence.

As time passed, storytelling developed into a form of expression; it became art.

Let's discuss the art of storytelling and dissect the mechanisms behind the intrigue.

Storytelling Is Powerful

Art and storytelling go hand in hand. Where art is an expression, storytelling is the voice communicating the message to the readers.

A story is a language that resonates with everyone regardless of age. If done right, it transfixes the reader as they segue away from reality into fictional worlds. If any medium can help you achieve this state of escape, it is incredibly powerful. Stories have the ability to entertain, inspire, and educate.

We are told stories about superheroes as they save the world. Fictitious or not, these heroes inspire us to impact this world in our own way. Hence, it is a loop; storytelling breeds heroes only for their legend to be passed on to a future hero.

Hand in Hand

Storytelling as an art form has evolved through the years. The medium by which we tell our stories varies depending on the story and the individuals they are being told to. Dating back to when human beings resided in caves, they used hieroglyphics for communicating and telling their stories. The Chauvet Cave in France harbors drawings that date back 30,000 years. This was until we discovered writing as another way to communicate. The evidence of written symbols dates back 9,000 years. The oldest written story ever to exist is known as The Epic of Gilgamesh, which dates back to 2000 BC; fast forward to the literary Renaissance when figures such as Geoffrey Chaucer and William Shakespeare pushed the boundaries of how stories can be told through theatre and poetry.

Then came along verbal storytelling that branches off into various other mediums. We have chants, poetry, and songs to express ourselves.

Storytelling is an art. Paint your best masterpiece as you walk through life.

And while you're at it, curious about the beauty of storytelling and its evolution through history, Chiaretto Calò presents a time capsule of a book that essentially is the story of, well, storytelling!
