When it comes to your house, your personal space should feel just that – personal. The days of following trends are in the past and your house shouldn't be a replica of your neighbours’.

Instead, we are embracing making our homes something which reflect ourselves.

In fact, 58% of people want a home which symbolises their personalities over following a popular trend. And by doing this, you can even make your home a more comfortable, happier place, with 81% of people claiming they feel most happy when their homes reflect who they are.

But how do you manage to get your personality on to the walls? Dominic Walsh, founder of handcrafted wooden furniture specialist, Off The Grain, has explored ways in which you can make your house feel like a personalised home.

Colour

Colours are a great way to start off exploring your personality within your home décor. Not only can you start by creating colour by adding it directly to your walls, but you can also use it dotted throughout the home from the colour of your curtains to your cushions.

Depending on your personality, you will want to choose a different colour. Each colour has their own symbolisms and personalities too, so picking one which reflects you is key.

Colours such as red represent strength and power, as well as energy. This is an overpowering colour which might be best as a minimal splash throughout your décor to show off your own excitement.

Whereas the colour green symbolises peace, rest, and security, making it a great colour to represent those who enjoy calming spaces. This is a great colour for your walls and can help you bring a feel of the outdoors inside if you are a bit of a green finger!

And if you are a renter who fancies changing the colour of your walls or adding a good neutral layer from which to showcase the rest of your room without the worry about your landlord complaining, you could try wall panels or peelable wallpaper for your walls.

These are great renter-friendly options which can make your space look unique without worrying about damage being left behind.

Furniture

The furniture you choose is important, too. These are the items you are likely to spend the most money, and time, deciding over. Finding pieces which truly speak to you and your personality can help show your guests who you are.

If you are a welcoming and extroverted person who loves inviting people into their home, then you might want to focus on items such as monks benches which are the perfect piece to add charm to any entryway. Or perhaps you are someone who enjoys their downtime and so you have the comfiest sofas and beds around!

Dominic said: “Finding furniture which not only looks good within your home, to your tastes, but is also functional for how you like to spend time can help you create the home of your dreams from any house. The way you source your furniture can also speak to your personality.

“If you are particularly environmentally conscious, then you might choose sustainable materials such as strong wooden pieces or consider buying second hand!”

Designated areas

Another way you can start making your house into a home personalised to your tastes is by focusing on designated areas dedicated to the things you enjoy. Hobbies are a large part of our lives, with 93% of people surveyed claiming they regularly take part in hobbies.

So why not consider making this a part of your own home. If you are an avid reader who enjoys spending their time curled up in an armchair reading the newest releases, then you could consider transforming that spare room into the library of your dreams.

Or, if you enjoy mechanics then you might create a workstation within your garage, for example.

Making sure you have areas within your home dedicated to the activities you love is important. These spaces are purely for you and not something which has to be shared – making them your own safe, personalised, spaces.

Souvenirs and photographs

The final touch to any home is the truly personal items you decide to display. These are the items which you have collected over the years, and they don’t necessarily have to be tied to you or your family but simply something you just loved!

Or they could even be the souvenirs you have collected over your holidays. Perhaps you like to collect sand from every beach you go to and layer it in a jar or you have a collection of fridge magnets from each city you go to – these can help brighten up your space while also giving any guests an insight into your travels.

You could also decorate with photographs of yourself, your family, and friends to help bring your space together. Whether this is a picture of your childhood pet on the mantel beam or a collage of family holidays on your living room wall.

Dominic added: “Whatever you decide to use to decorate your home, remember it is your own personal space and so it should be as comfortable as possible for you. Some people love décor which is mismatched, while others prefer a more minimalist approach.”

And with our homes becoming a huge centre of our lives, with options such as work from home meaning we are spending more time in the house, it is more important than ever to love the space you are in and to make it your own.
