HOMEOPATHY: THE HOLISTIC APPROACH TO ALLERGIES
3 min read

Homoeopathy is that branch of medicine that often deals in a process-oriented approach rather than a result-oriented approach; it also believes in the philosophy of "like cures like", meaning the body is composed of the five elements, which are fire, air, water, space and earth is capable of curing itself and recovering faster than expected, the derivatives of homoeopathic medicine are mostly from the natural sources or the plant-based derivatives.

The major criticism of homoeopathic medicines is that it takes comparatively longer than their allopathic counterparts. Yes, homoeopathy is a slower process than allopathy, but it does not address the symptoms upwards. It identifies the root cause and also, with a few lifestyle modification changes from the patient's end, can lead to visible results.

“An allergy in allopathy is seen as a reaction to a substance. Still, homoeopathy sees an allergy as an internal imbalance, homoeopathy consists of highly diluted natural substances, and the beauty of nature is that there is always a substitute for one particular ailment in nature. Hence if an individual is allergic to a particular substance, then with proper consultation with one's physician, there can always be an alternative.” explained a popular homoeopathic doctor in Mumbai

An allergy is usually caused when the body mistakes a particular food protein for an intruder and produces antibodies against it. The reason for the body producing antibodies is the inability to produce the required enzymes, which help digest the food material. The inability to produce lactase, the enzyme required to digest lactose, makes certain people lactose intolerant.

Albumin is a protein produced by the liver, which is then used by the body to digest substances that contain sulphur, like eggs, nuts, etc. Any deficiency in producing albumen can lead to allergic reactions in the body to such foods.

Also, as homoeopathy likes to mention, one of the major reasons for allergy to foods is either parent having a history of allergic reactions.

HOW DIFFERENT IS A COMMON COLD FROM AN ALLERGIC REACTION?

  1. "The reaction to a food substance causes an allergy due to the body not being exposed to the food substance earlier, whereas a common cold is a viral infection of the upper nasal tract which lasts up to a few days or weeks." Explained a homoeopathic doctor in Ludhiana.

PRECAUTIONS WHILE TAKING HOMOEOPATHIC MEDICINES

  1. The major precautions while taking homoeopathic medicines is that one should avoid using scented perfumes, powders or hair oils because the natural derivative may not function to its best in the presence of the artificially manufactured substance.
  2. It is always advised to avoid taking the homoeopathic medicine in hand before taking it in the mouth or exposing it for a long time to the atmosphere or an individual's hand because the hand contains good bacteria that aid in digestion and assimilation of nutrients through the mouth by the process of mastication  and, secondly naturally prepared substances are in a very concentrated and volatile form which is why exposing them to moisture may reduce its ability to work.
