What is Ring Rolling?

One starts a ring rolling process with a circular metal preform. Such preform is previously upset and pierced to form a hollow doughnut using the open die forging process. The hollow doughnut is then heated above the recrystallization temperature and placed over the mandrel roll or idler. The roll then moves under pressure toward a drive roll. The drive roll here continuously rotates to reduce the wall thickness. The purpose of this reduction is to increase the diameters, i.e., I.D. and O.D., of the resulting ring.
