'Full-time starter in place of Kim' Dyer named UCL Team of the Week

Eric Dier (30, Bayern Munich), who started in place of Kim Min-Jae (28), was named one of the UCL's best players.

The European Football Association (UEFA) announced the Champions League teams of the week on its official website on Sunday. The team is made up of the 11 players with the highest scores of the week in the UCL Fantasy Football Game.

The matches are the four second-leg ties of the round of 16. The team is made up of players from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) vs Real Sociedad, Bayern Munich vs Lazio, Manchester City vs Copenhagen, and Real Madrid vs Leipzig.

Bayern Munich had a whopping five players.

The Bavarians defeated SS Lazio 3-0 in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg of the 2023-2024 season at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany, on June 6th. After losing the first leg 0-1, Munich defeated Lazio at home to advance to the quarterfinals with a 3-1 aggregate score.

Kim Min-jae started this game from the bench. Munich went with a 4-2-3-1 formation. Harry Kane was up front, with Jamal Musial-Thomas Muller-Leroy Sane in the attacking second line. Leon Goretzka-Alexandar Pavlovic lined up in the center of the pitch, while Japhael Geheiro-Eric Dier-Matthijs de Ligt-Joh-Joachim Kimmich formed the back four. Manuel Neuer was in goal.

After losing the first leg 0-1, Munich took the momentum at home. 안전놀이터 They maintained 60% possession and attempted 24 shots, with seven on target. Lazio, on the other hand, managed just five shots, none of which were on target.

Munich won thanks to a multi-goal performance from Kane and a header from Muller.

Dier and Der Licht formed the central defense for Munich on the day. Kim Min-Jae, who started on the bench, was not used.

Dier played the full time and had a high passing success rate of 96% (85/89). He had one touch in the opponent's box, four passes into the attacking area, three clearances and two interceptions. After the game, ratings specialist POTM gave Dyer a solid 7.2 rating.

Der Licht completed 94% of his passes (100/106), created one chance, had three touches in the opponent's box, and made seven passes into the attacking area. He also had one interception, four clearances, two ball recoveries, and three aerial contest wins. The media gave him a high rating of 8.1.

Together, the two players were named to the UCL Team of the Week.

"Der Licht and Dyer had a very good game against Leipzig," said head coach Thomas Tuchel after the Lazio match on June 6, "and it was a difficult decision to leave Kim out. It was a difficult decision to leave Kim out. It had nothing to do with his performance. We will still need him," he said of Kim's exclusion and Dyer and Der Licht's inclusion in the starting lineup.

Dyer, who joined Tottenham from Sporting CP in 2014, has made 363 appearances in all competitions for Tottenham Hotspur. Entering his 10th season with the club in 2023-2024, Dyer has played 197 games as a center back, 136 as a defensive midfielder, and 25 in other positions, making him an integral part of the team regardless of ability.

A mainstay for Tottenham every season, Dyer's role suddenly diminished in 2023-2024. The departure of Antonio Conte and the arrival of new manager Enzi Postecoglou, with Mickey van der Vaart and Cristian Romero as the first-choice center backs, left him without a place to stand.

Dier, who had been identified as a weakness in Spurs' defense, was reduced to a surplus resource who couldn't easily find a place on the bench.

However, since his move to Munich, Dier has been slowly gaining ground. To be fair, he hasn't been completely relegated to the bench, but he's made fewer mistakes than he did at Spurs. He's gone from Tottenham's 'bomb' to a solid Munich member.

Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappe (PSG), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Julian Alvarez (Man City), Mikel Merino (Real Sociedad), Mohamed Elneny (Copenhagen), Rafael Gueiroux, Eric Dier and Matthijs de Ligt (over Man City), Billy Orban (Leipzig), Manuel Akanji (Man City) and Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich) were named to the Team of the Week.
