Learning to shift the weight is one of the most important and essential part of mountain biking especially when you are new with little experience and you are riding a rough terrain or trail. Challenging terrains can be difficult for you because you may come across some sharp drops and inclines. In order to retain traction when you are ascending a challenging trail, you should lean forward and move your weight forward to keep your center of gravity over the back wheel. Move in the other way when the you are moving downwards or descending. Here, you need to put more weight over the back wheel and position your body and back behind the saddle.

An important aspect of safety when you are riding your mountain bike down a challenging terrain or trail is going easy on the brakes. It is important for you to understand that mountain bikes have really powerful brakes and if you are tempted hit them too hard, which is something that most newbies tend to do, it can lead to the tires skidding and causing an accident. So, make sure you are very careful on the brakes.
