Autism Life Skills You Need To Know
3 min read

One out of thirty-six children are suffering from autism in the US. This is a disorder that makes a person hesitate in communicating with others. It is a group of a range of challenges that is often referred to as an autism "spectrum" disorder (ASD)."

Some people with autism may have exceptional abilities in certain areas, such as mathematics or music, while others may face significant challenges in daily living. So, if you're suffering from autism or a parent, let's talk about some essential autism life skills that you should work on.

  • Ability to process information, organize thoughts, plan actions, create to-do lists, and manage complex thinking.
  • Learning independent adult living skills, such as handling money, shopping, paying bills, managing a bank account, housekeeping, clothing care, home maintenance, meal preparation, and independent travel.
  • Performing grooming, hygiene, showering, toileting, toothbrushing. Includes self-care like regular exercise, dealing with common illnesses, and creating coping strategies for uncomfortable situations.
  • Preparation for meaningful work, including job-seeking skills, identifying appropriate jobs, investigating opportunities, applying, interviewing, and developing work habits.
  • Learning punctuality, regular attendance, helping others, following directions, and observing regulations.
  • Identifying danger, respecting emergency procedures, and explicit education about risks at home, during travel, fire safety, emergency procedures, and avoiding unsafe situations.
  • Demonstrating appropriate behavior, respect towards others, recognizing authority, and following instructions.
  • Developing adult life skills in speaking, listening, responding appropriately, working in groups, making friends, managing family relationships, and effective phone communication.
  • Teaching individuals to effectively express needs, ask questions, approach others for help, say no, and solve problems.
  • Promoting self-esteem and independence through recognizing difficulties and seeking assistance.

What Can Cause Autism?

The exact and actual cause of autism is not fully understood. Also, there's no vaccination has been discovered to cure them. It is believed to result from a combination of genetic, neurological, and environmental factors such as:

    • Certain genetic mutations or changes in specific genes.
    • Atypical brain development.
    • Low birth-body weight.
    • Imbalances in neurotransmitters.
    • Certain prenatal factors or exposure to certain drugs, toxins, or infections during pregnancy.
    • Born to older parents.
    • Fragile X syndrome or other genetic disorder.
    • Complications during birth or exposure to environmental toxins or heavy metals in early life.

Bottom Line

As a parent of a child with autism or a patient yourself, you have to be a little more confident. Autism can be detected as soon as 60 months after the child's birth. Remember, it takes a lot of time and patience to keep trying to communicate and get over it, but the result is worth it all.
