YouTube Blocks Hong Kong Protest Anthem After Court Injunction

global news / world news

YouTube has restricted access to videos featuring the protest anthem "Glory to Hong Kong" following a court injunction that banned the song in the city. Originating from the 2019 anti-government protests, the anthem gained significant traction. YouTube confirmed its adherence to the court order, removing more than 32 videos featuring the anthem, classified as "prohibited publications" under the injunction.

Attempts to access these videos from Hong Kong now prompt an unavailability message, citing the court order. The court's rationale behind the ban revolves around concerns that the song could be utilized to incite secession, prompting the government's request for its prohibition.

Expressing disappointment, YouTube acknowledged compliance with the removal order while exploring options for appeal to uphold access to information. The move has sparked concerns among human rights organizations regarding its implications for online free expression.

Additionally, links to the banned videos will be excluded from Google Search results in Hong Kong. George Chen, co-chair of digital practice at Asia Group, cautioned against aggressive content removal, citing potential repercussions on investor confidence and Hong Kong's status as a financial hub.

The anthem, often sung during the 2019 protests, has previously caused diplomatic tensions when played mistakenly at international events instead of China's anthem. Authorities have previously arrested individuals for publicly playing the song without permits. Critics argue that the ban exacerbates the erosion of freedom of expression and may disrupt tech companies' operations, impacting the city's attractiveness as a business hub.
