When did my pillow stop plumping?

3 min read

Last night I slept well at the Hilton, where I was a guest. The cushion gave me instant bliss. It shaped my head and neck and gave me a good night's sleep. The entire ordeal has left me puzzled about the issue of my flat pillowcases. I have to replace my pillows annually because of how rapidly they flatten out. I wanted to know what made the pillow at the hotel so much better than my own.

First things first, I looked at the motel pillow. White Goose Down to the tune of 700 fill power around a feather core. Therefore, I decided to do some online investigation. To begin, a better quality bounce back Pillows will have a greater fill power. An 800-fill power pillow is the most durable and long-lasting option, providing the same amount of support night after night. Did you get it, for a very long time? A fill power of 600 or above is considered standard for a high-quality pillow. These days, a goose-down pillow with a high fill power may cost you anywhere from forty to one hundred dollars. That's insane, right? Maybe. More investigation was required on my part.

As a further step, I inspected the pillows on my bed. I usually get inexpensive pillows filled with polyester fiber from Walmart. There is no mention of the power fill, presumably since it is negligible. So that's why the air pressure quickly drops. Other than being filled with polyester fiber rather than goose down and without an inner core, of course. Two large pillows cost less than $15, and a body pillow costs less than $20. However, they're cheap and easily deflated, so is it worthwhile?

It's become a burning mystery to me why the Hilton, and probably other hotels as well, charge so much for their pillows. Why not just buy the cheapest pillows available? Just give it some thought. A high-quality cushion with a fill power of 800 may be used for years to come. I discovered a few items that boast a fifteen-year form retention rate. If that's the case, hotels may save money by replacing their pillows every 10 years instead of every year; also, guests will appreciate the improved comfort and the hotel's bottom line will benefit from the increased occupancy.

At this point in my investigation and analysis, I began physically punishing myself. Sober up. No more pillows from Walmart. There will no longer be a set of large pillows for under $15 or those filled with polyester fiber. No more yearly pillow shopping trips. I've decided to splurge on a decade-long goose-down pillow with 800-fill power. I'm psyched.
