Have you ever wondered how people go missing? What is the reason behind it? Where do they even go? And why, more times than not, they are lost forever and declared dead?

Statistically, thousands of people go missing every year, leaving behind loved ones waiting desperately for answers, anything that may take them a step closer to finding them. Although some missing person cases are resolved eventually, many remain unanswered, haunting us forever. Spanning across the arid landscapes of the Western deserts, these desolate regions are filled with countless tales of mystery and intrigue.

In this blog, we will delve into some of the most perplexing and heartbreaking cases of the West that have left behind a trail of unanswered questions and have baffled investigators.

The Disappearance of Amelia Earhart

One of history's most famous missing persons cases is the legendary Amelia Earhart. In 1937, Amelia set out on her circle-the-earth attempt to become the first woman to fly around the world. However, her efforts ended when her flight mysteriously vanished over the Pacific Ocean.

Despite extensive search efforts, neither her plane nor she was ever found. In 1939, officials declared her dead, ending the search for the missing person. Although many theories emerged, some saying that she was captured by the Japanese or crash-landed on a remote island, the truth remains hidden.

The Mystery of Susan Powell

Another famous missing person case, this one from the West, is the mysterious disappearance of Susan Powell. In 2009, her disappearance from her home in West Valley City, Utah, garnered much attention from the national media.

Although her husband, Joshua, was named as a person of interest in the presumed murder, he was never charged. About two years later, he committed a murder-suicide – killing himself and his two sons, creating a greater mystery as to what actually happened.

How did Susan disappear? Was her husband responsible for her disappearance? We will never know.

The Tale of the Missing Son

One of the most thought-provoking missing person cases is the case of the missing son in WASHED UP: A SW Desert Mystery by Patricia Dustman and MaryEllen Tinsley. In this intriguing cozy, the author introduces three friends who live in the southwestern desert and love anything remotely close to mystery.

While heading out on the trail of a mysterious desert shootout, the trio ends up in the middle of a series of mysteries. A washed-up log, a shootout in the desert, an abandoned ranch, a deadly feud, and a mother's long-hidden journals – all intertwined, leaving many unanswered questions.

Are all of these mysteries somehow related to the case of the missing son? A missing son that was never found …though speculation abounds?

And if you are wondering how it all happened at the same time, whether it was a coincidence or not, and how the trio will find the hidden solutions, you’ll be treated to a great read in WASHED UP: A SW Desert Mystery while you give your curiosity a boost.
