The largest retail company on the planet, Walmart, with 11,000 stores divided into 65 brands and spread over 28 different countries, is also the company with the most employees in the world. The US multinational has 2.2 million workers, of which 1.6 million are in the US.

That means that it has more workers than the total population of countries like Lesotho, Latvia or Trinidad and Tobago, or twice as many as the inhabitants of Barranquilla or Cartagena.

In second place among the companies with the most employees is the renowned e-commerce giant Amazon. The company founded by billionaire Jeff Bezos employs 1.6 million people around the world and about a million of them are from the US.

According to the most recent employment report from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are 158.11 million nonfarm workers on the payroll. That means one in every 158 employed Americans works for Amazon.

“People join us not only because of the wide variety of roles, great pay and benefits, but also because of the career development opportunities we provide,” says John Boumphrey, Amazon UK country manager.

In the case of Walmart, which employs almost 1.6 million people in the US, one of every 98 workers in that country is part of the retail company's payroll.

Econometrics estimates inflation at 10.2%, unemployment at 10.60% and growth at 8.5%

While it's possible that more people work at McDonald's than Amazon or Walmart, as the fast-food brand estimates there are more than two million people working in the restaurant chain's jobs worldwide, the company primarily operates with a franchise model, so it directly employs less than 50,000 people in the North American country alone.

Although the first places of the companies with the most employees in the world are from the United States, the next three positions are for Chinese companies. In fact, of the 10 companies with the most workers worldwide, seven are from the US or China.

Third place goes to the state-owned China National Petroleum Corporation, a fuel-producing company and the largest integrated oil and Gas Company in the Asian country. It has more than 1.3 million workers and is third in the list of the 50 largest oil companies in the world.

Among the organizations with the most employees, China Post Group Corporation is fourth on the list with more than 927,000 workers. The public company operates China's official postal service.

Rounding out the top five is the largest electric power transmission and Distribution Company in China and the world, the State Grid Corporation of China, which has more than 907,000 employees.

In sixth place is a company with headquarters other than the US or China. Hon Hai Precision Industry, better known as Foxconn, is a Taiwanese multinational with more than 757,000 employees, which manufactures electronic products to order. It is the largest manufacturer of electronic components worldwide.

Rounding out the top 10 are German carmaker Volkswagen (671,205), British multinational food services company Compass Group (596,452), Chinese oil company Sinopec (582,648), and the US Postal Service, which employs more than 565,000 people. .

When analyzed by sectors, trade and energy stand out above the rest, but the courier service also has a significant workforce with other examples such as Germany's DHL.
