QuickBooks users store Company Files on different computers and they need to access it. QuickBooks give the facility to access these files on multi-user mode. QuickBooks Error H505 may occur when you try to reach a Company File that has not been stored on your computer but some other system. QuickBooks error H505 may also occur in a case when a user tries to reach a file that has been saved on their computer system itself but it is not properly configured.

What is QuickBooks Error H505?

QuickBooks error H505 is a hosting error and is one of the series H101, H202 etc. It appears when you try to reach Company Files of QuickBooks. It is accessed using multi-user mode. It mostly occurs while trying to access the file on some other computer but it may also occur if some file is on the same system but is not configured properly and you try to access it. It may occur if the file needs additional installations and setups for it to be accessed.

This might also occur if some firewall setting on the computer where the file is stored is not allowing the access or if the (.ND) file is damaged.

Methods to troubleshoot QuickBooks error H505

Errors of this series mostly have similar troubleshooting methods and that depends on the reasons that might be causing the error. The various methods to troubleshoot QuickBooks error H505.

Before starting the real troubleshooting measures, you should ensure a few important things first. Users might forget these trivial things thus facing the error. These are:

  • Ensure that QuickBooks has been logged in as an administrator.
  • You should make sure that the multi-user mode is enabled before proceeding further.

To troubleshoot the error, first, you should change the firewall settings to create the exception for QuickBooks.

Secondly, you should analyze the Hosting settings of QuickBooks. Here are the steps to do that.

  • Open the QuickBooks application on both the computers and then go to File > utilities > Stop Hosting Multi-user Configuration.
  • You have to turn on the Hosting by File on the computer whose file has to be accessed.
  • Now restart the QuickBooks again on both the computers.

Sometimes, when you try to log in to QuickBooks remotely and the file is already being used by someone on the location then you will encounter the error. You would not be able to access the file remotely unless the person using the file on location logs out.
