BIS registration is a certification that indicates a product's compliance with the specific quality standards established by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). The BIS is a government-established organization that aims to promote product quality and safety. This certification is particularly significant for products that have implications for health, safety, and the environment. The Legal Metrology Act, 2009 (' LMA') was introduced in order to safeguard consumer interests and rights. Effective April 01, 2011, LMA establishes and enforces standards for packaged products.

Legal Metrology Registration law is applicable to all packaged products which are manufactured/imported and sold in 'packed form' in the Indian market. Legal metrology registration can be applied in two capacities: Manufacturer/Packer Importer Products that pertain to the "weight & measures" category, like weighing machine and thermometer, fall under the category of Weights & Measure which needs to take four different registrations from the legal metrology registration department, i.e. Model Approval Packaged Commodity Registration Import License Dealership License Products that are not falling under the category of the "Weights & Measure Certificate" category need to take only the 'Packaged Commodity Registration' from the department. Model Approval Certificate: It is applicable only on products that fall underweight & measurement category. This model approval registration shall be granted by the Central Government. We need to submit the sample in the lab to test if it is according to Indian standards or not.

Packaged Commodity Registration: This is applicable to all the packaged commodities which are to be retailed to end consumers. Manufacturers/Importers need to provide relevant product
