Riding a bicycle in the mountains requires the right equipment. If your bike get punctured  midway and need help fixing it, you must bring some mini-pumps. Since, there are a number of models available, you must pick the right bicycle pump for a comfortable ride.

Most mini pumps come with high-quality aluminium construction, extra-grip handles, anodised parts, dual-valve compatibility and even some that you can put a tool inside. The outcome is that, most modern mini pumps are more suitable and pricier.

You can either hold them in your person or on a bike. Stockpiling them in a pack is preferable since the pump won't get covered in dirt and grit and will not hold up when you come to use it.

Though they are called mini pumps, a pump's size or volume greatly affects how much action is required to pump a mountain bike tyre. Unlike road bikes, MTB tyres have higher volume but run lower pressure, which means you need a pump with a large air chamber if you want to pump the tyres quickly.

What you should know:

1] Grip

Your hands can get slippery while trying to pump the tyre after refitting an inner tube, so some form of grip is necessary. Ensure, the head and handle are properly sized because you need to brace against them when pumping the tyre.

2]Dual/Smart head

There are currently two valves commonly used – Presta and Schrader. However, the best smart heads automatically adjust without taking anything apart. MTBs use Presta valves; you only need to do it once. Both solutions work, but you usually pay slightly more for the latter.

3] Thumb Lock

You require a lockable head to ensure the pump doesn't drop off the valve during vigorous pumping. It will also stop air loss and leaks.

4] Frame Clip

You can carry the pump on your bike using the supplied plastic snap-on clip, which usually scales under your bottle cage. It must be offset to the side of the cage and have a strap so the pump doesn't fall out on the first rough descent.

Racks and carriers:

Making a suitable bike carrier depends on several factors. These are including:

  • How often do you plan to use the rack?
  • How many bikes do you need to transport?
  • What type of vehicle you drive?
  • The type of bicycles you're looking to carry.
  • Your budget.

If what you intend to transport is not heavy, you can consider getting a seat post-mounted bicycle carrier. Some models are supplied with a quick-release mechanism. Check the labels or with the supplier how much weight the carrier you are interested in can handle.

What are SPD pedals?

SPD Shimano pedals are select pedals and cleats that attach to the bottom of clipless cycling shoes. They make cycling more efficient by delivering a better foot-to-pedal link and safer by offering almost instant foot entry and release.

SPD stands for Shimano Pedaling Dynamics, a model of clipless bicycle pedals and cleats released in 1990. SPD pedals are a product of a distinctive brand and are very popular for clipless pedals.
