There are four sections in the Listening Module. There are forty questions altogether. The audio will be played for around 30 minutes. The Listening Modules are the same for both the Academic and General Training

During the IELTS Course in Gurgaon, you will be given time to read the questions before you hear the audio. As you listen, you should write your answers in your test booklet. The answers in the audio are in order so do not wait till the end. If you are unsure about one question, leave it and keep going or you will miss the upcoming questions.

At the end of each part, you will be given half a minute to check your answers. Subsequently you will be given additional 10 minutes to transfer your answers from your test booklet to the answer sheet.

Listening Tips and Techniques -

  1. Use the time before each listening section and highlight key words in the question, e.g. who, where, when and what.
  2. Study all types of questions thoroughly. Be well prepared for what the question might ask you to do. If you are asked to give a letter (A) do not write the phrase.
  3.  Write notes in your question booklet as you listen. You can circle possible answers and change your mind when you finally transfer your answers to the answer booklet.
  4. Try to answer all the questions as there is no negative marking.
  5. Whenever you get a chance, read the next set of questions. Try to assume what                     you are going to hear next.
  6. When you make assumptions, ask yourself: Who? What? When? Where? And how?
  7. The correct answer is often repeated, but the words may not be written in the same way as they are heard. The test will use paraphrases and synonyms.
  8. Ignore all the distractions as the test may have some irrelevant discussions.
  9. When you write a word in a blank, write correct spellings otherwise you do not get any marks for incorrect spellings.
  10. Sometimes speakers correct themselves for distracting the listener. Their second statement is usually the correct answer.
  11. Try to be familiar with different accents while doing listening practice.

 

Completing the Blanks

Number of Words and Spelling

Many IELTS Classes in Gurgaon test-takers do not fill in the blanks correctly. Some test-takers write more than the suggested number of words, or they misspell the answer.

If you make these mistakes, you will lose marks. Write the correct number of words and spell your answer right.

Number of words

Complete the sentences. Write no more than three words for each answer.

Incorrect: John wore a long, grey, leather coat. ­­­­­­­­­­­­­

Correct: John wore a grey, leather coat.

The incorrect answer above counts as four words. Four words will count against you. Use no more than three words.

Spelling

Incorrect: John wore a grey, lether coat.

Correct: John wore a grey, leather coat.

You must spell the words correctly or you lose marks.

 

Gender and Number

The words you write in a blank must match the tense, gender and number of the rest of the sentence. Do not use a singular noun when a plural noun has to be inserted.

 

Verb Agreement

Incorrect: The students in the school laboratory is doing some experiments.

Correct: The students in the school laboratory are doing some experiments.

The incorrect answer above uses a singular verb is. A plural verb are refers to the plural subject students. The singular noun school laboratory is the object of the preposition in, not the subject of the sentence.

 

Singular/Plural Noun

Incorrect: They ordered ten book.

Correct: They ordered ten books.

The incorrect answer above uses a singular noun book. A plural noun books is needed because of the plural number ten.

 

Pronoun Agreement

Incorrect: The patients have confidence in his doctors.

Correct: The patients have confidence in their doctors.

The incorrect answer above uses a singular pronoun his. A plural pronoun their refers to the plural subject patients.

 

Articles

When completing a blank, you must use an article -a, an, the-if Grammar requires.

When referring to something in general, you can use a plural noun without an article, or you can use a singular noun with a or an. If you use an uncountable noun, do not use an article when speaking in general.

Incorrect: Child needs good nutrition to become healthy.

Correct: A child needs good nutrition to become healthy.

 

When referring to specific people, places or things, use the with a singular, plural or uncountable noun.

Incorrect: Home assignment in this class is very time consuming.

Correct: The home assignment in this class is very time consuming.

Gerunds, Infinitives and Base Form Verbs

When you write a verb, you must use the correct form. The main verb of a sentence has a verb tense whereas other verbs in a sentence can be in the gerund, infinitive or base form.

Gerunds (verb + ing) can be used as the subject of a sentence. Gerunds follow certain verbs. They also follow prepositions.

Incorrect: Eat sweets can cause obesity and other health problems.

Correct: Eating sweets can cause obesity and other health problems.

 

Incorrect: Many tourists enjoy to visit historical monuments.

Correct: Many tourists enjoy visiting historical monuments.

 

Incorrect: They are interested in learn about history.

Correct: They are interested in learning about history.

 

Infinitives (to verb) often follows adjectives. Infinitives also follow certain verbs.

Incorrect: In Siberia, it is important keeping warm.

Correct: In Siberia it is important to keep warm.

 

Base form verbs follow modals

Incorrect: You can to find information in the college library.

Correct: You can find the information in the college library.
