Here's What Emojis Really Mean on Snapchat

Introducing the Snapchat feature that replaced Best Friends

Snapchat users who send and receive multiple snaps with friends will see small emoji icons next to their friends' names in the Chats tab. Some are very popular; some art does not. If you've noticed them while using the app, you might be a little curious to know exactly what Snapchat emojis can tell you about your friendship.

First of all, what exactly is the Snapchat Friend Emoji?

The Snapchat app tracks your messaging habits with your friends — both individuals and groups — and then assigns them emojis that represent the current state of your interaction level. As you continue to send and receive messages, the emoji will change over time. Even if you stop texting for a while, the emoji can disappear completely.

Snapchat Friend Emoji Meaning

Each emoji you see next to a friend's name means something about your friendship on Snapchat (not necessarily your friendship in real life, of course). There are currently six different emojis to look at, which include:

Two Pink Hearts: If you see two pink hearts next to a username, that means that friend has been a Snapchat BFF or your Super BFF for a whopping two months straight. It also means you've been two months from your friend's first best friend out of all your friends.

Red Heart: When a yellow heart comes to a red heart - your "BFF" - if you remain one of the best friends for a period of two weeks.

Yellow Heart: If you haven't been intercepted long enough, but have attracted a friend more often, you can see the yellow heart that appears when they are your best friends and you are their best friend. What Does The X Mean On Snapchat?

Smiley face with smiling eyes: A smiley face emoji with pink characters next to a friend's name means they're another one of your best friends (but not your number one).

Smurf Face: When you see a smiley face next to a friend's name, it means you are that friend's best friend, but you are not their best friend. (You have another best friend.)

Snotty Face: A grin that bears teeth as if they're screaming next to their friend's name means your BFF is also their BFF number.

Sunglasses: If you see a smiley face next to your username, it means one of your best friends is also one of their best friends.

Fire: If you're super active on Snapchat, a fire flame emoji may appear next to someone's name to indicate you're on a "snap streak." You've been snapping them around for a lot of time over the past few days, and the longer you stick around, the higher the snap streak number you'll see next to the Fire Emoji.

Sparkles: If you encounter multiple friends in a group, a shadow emoji will appear next to it, which can help you recognize all the friends you've included in group chats.

Baby: A baby emoji next to a friend's name means they are new friends added.

Want to know a fun Snapchat trick? You can actually change the emoji for all of the above interactions so you see the exact emojis you want to see next to your friends' names.

Simply go to the camera tab and tap the ghost icon at the top to pull up your profile, tap the gear icon in the top right corner to open the settings, and then tap Manage settings under the "Additional services" section.

On the next tab, tap on Friend Emojis, and there you will see a list of all the emojis with their corresponding meanings. You can tap on any of them to actually set that specific interaction to whatever emotion you want.

For example, if you'd like your Super BFF emoji to become a pile of poo emoji instead of two pink hearts, then you can definitely do that. If you do this, whenever you have a Super BFF, a pile of emo poo will appear next to that friend's name in the "Chat" tab.

Snapchat's Move from BFFs to Friend Emojis

In older versions of Snapchat, you may remember the popular Best Friends feature , which listed the 3 to 7 friends you collected the most at the top of your friend list. In fact, they could tap on a username to reveal who their best friends were.

Due to privacy concerns raised by high-net-worth individuals using Snapchat, the user's newest feature was illegal during an update to the app in January 2015. Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel announced on Twitter that it was only temporary and that it would feature back when you would worry about privacy issues first.

An update to the app released in early April 2015 saw the return of the best friends features, now known as this version of "friend emojis". Unlike the old best friends feature, which was published for everyone to see, emoji friends are completely private. You can only see friends with your friends, which are indicated by emojis that appear next to their usernames.

The biggest annoyance with this is that most users need to look up what they mean by agreeing with the sheaf because there doesn't seem to be a description in the app. Other than that, it's a fun and visual principle to pique the interest of users about what their relationship with their Snapchat friend really means!
