Erik ten Hag and Cristiano Ronaldo to have crunch Manchester United talks

Erik ten Hag and Cristiano Ronaldo to have crunch Manchester United talks
4 min read

Cristiano Ronaldo isn't been out of the headlines of late, but for all the wrong reasons. The Portuguese is very much on the periphery at Manchester United, not helped by his own acting out, and he's now set to speak to Erik ten Hag in an attempt to resolve the nightmare situation.

Following his tantrum during United's win over Tottenham recently, Cristiano was left out of the squad for their subsequent draw away at Chelsea. There have since been suggestions that he may be exiled for longer than just one game as punishment.

But this Monday, Ten Hag and Cristiano are set to sit down and discuss the situation at the club, and the no.7's position at Old Trafford.

The Chelsea option

Ronaldo has a contract at United until the end of the season, but there are now reports suggesting that the club will let him leave on a free transfer in January just to be rid of his destructive behaviour. It's clear that he has no place in the team.

The Daily Mail have reported that Chelsea are back in the picture when it comes to a potential destination for Ronaldo, with owner Todd Boehly keen to bring him to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea had been interested in him during the summer, but apparently Thomas Tuchel wasn't sold on the idea. His sacking since has reopened the door and Boehly is reportedly close to agent Jorge Mendes.

It is not yet known how Graham Potter feels about the idea of signing Cristiano.

Cristiano's petulance

Things came to a head at Manchester United when Cristiano Ronaldo refused to come on as a late substitute in the win over Spurs.

Instead, he headed down the tunnel before the game had ended and even left Old Trafford before the final whistle blew.

Since, he has been training away from the first team and with the under-21 side instead.

Cristiano Ronaldo is going through the worst moment of his career, but it looks as though the Portuguese striker may be handed a lifeline in January.

After being left out of the Manchester United squad for Saturday's match against Chelsea, reports suggesting the Red Devils would be willing to let the forward leave on loan have emerged.

While United were said to be concerned about a lack of suitors, it seems Chelsea, who were linked with Ronaldo during the summer, are prepared to make a move.

The Blues opted to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang instead of Ronaldo at the request of then coach Thomas Tuchel, but with the German gone, ownership are now ready to make their move.

Current coach Graham Potter would welcome the signing, as the likes of Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech have struggled to find the back of the net this season. Landing Ronaldo would allow him to move Aubaymeyang out to the wing.

In order to facilitate a move, it's believed Cristiano would be willing to reduce his wages, which were the biggest obstacle in the summer. The next few days will be telling according to Sunday World, as there's even talk of United and Ronaldo terminating their contract.

The Athletic go a step further by detailing that if Ronaldo refuses to accept Ten Hag's handling of him, by playing a sparser role than he'd like, then the Dutchman would not stand in his way of letting him go. Ultimately, if perennial starter Ronaldo needs can't stomach a reduced role at United then the exit door will be shown.

United would be happy to see Ronaldo leave as long as they can find a club who is willing to pay his mammoth £360,000-a-week wages.

As reported by Sportsmail, Chelsea co-controlling owner Todd Boehly may be open to signing Ronaldo in January.

Boehly has forged a close relationship with Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes and was interested in signing the 37-year-old from Manchester United in the summer, but found opposition from then Blues boss Thomas Tuchel.
