If you feel yourself giving in to negativity, you must take action and change your thinking. There are a few tips you can follow to avoid negative thinking and to embrace positivity. First of all, identify the thoughts and words that are not helpful to you. Once you identify them, try to reframe them as challenges instead.

Saying "No" to negativity

Saying "No" is a powerful way to distance yourself from situations and people that negatively impact your life. While it may hurt the feelings of others, saying "no" will also free up your time and emotional bandwidth. Moreover, saying no is a brave act. By saying no to negativity, you will reinforce your emotional well-being and will be able to have more fulfilling relationships.

When you encounter people or situations that make you feel bad, stay calm and stay focused on your priorities. Then, you will be able to decide whether to engage in the discussion or leave the situation altogether. Remember that the person who is feeding you on negativity is not going to support you.

Identifying unhelpful thoughts

Identifying unhelpful thoughts is an important step in treating depression. These thoughts often arise as a result of a traumatic event. These intrusive memories can add to the emotional distress, and extreme and unhelpful thoughts can make the depression worse and last longer. The goal of CBT therapy is to help patients learn to identify and challenge these negative thoughts. Patients learn to categorize unhelpful thoughts by category, such as those that relate to responsibility, identity, and wastefulness.

Identifying unhelpful thoughts begins by asking the patient specific questions to better understand how these thoughts affect them. For example, what is the impact of these thoughts on the patient's actions and feelings?

Identifying unhelpful words

If a student is having trouble identifying a word, it is important to ask for help. They can ask their teacher, a parent, or another student to help them out. In either case, they should use a word identification strategy to make sure that they can understand the text.

Reframing "problems" into "challenges"

Reframing "problems" into challenges can be a great way to create a fresh outlook on the problems you face. First, you need to consider your own viewpoint. It's important to note that this viewpoint might be different for each problem you face. Next, brainstorm possible solutions and root-causes of the problem. It's important to think about the problem from many angles to uncover the most effective solution.

If a problem seems too challenging to overcome, start by reframing it as a challenge. For example, if you own a building, the owner of that building has an old elevator. It is causing complaints among tenants who threaten to cancel their leases if the elevator is not fixed. Another example would be an airport where baggage takes too long.

Surrounding yourself with positive people

Choosing to surround yourself with positive people can have a significant impact on your romantic and business relationships. These positive people will help you to adopt empowering beliefs and view life as a gift. By contrast, negative people will hold you back. The more positive people you associate with, the better off you will be. These people will also help you explore yourself and grow into the person you aspire to be.

Surrounding yourself with positive people will also increase your confidence. Having a high self-image attracts positive people and experiences, while a low self-perception attracts negative people and experiences. The best way to create an environment that is positive is to think, speak, smile, and act positively.
